OHINEMURI.
Visit op Mb Goudon.—Mr H. A. Gordon, Government Mining Inspector, visited this district on Wednesday lust. He was accompanied by Col. Eraser, M.H.H., and Engineer Aiken of the f J hames. On arriving from To Aroha lie made a tour to Karangahake, where lie inspected the tramway to the new mill, the Mammoth mine, and other properties. He was interviewed in reference to the proposed road c-'iinoction between Karangahake and To Aroha via the Waitawheta (Jorge, and mentioned thai he thought the work advisable, but though) that Government had no funds available for tho purpose. Wiiihi was afterwards visited, and a promise of £lfiO for mine roads was extracted. Kor the pack track to Maritoto Mr Gordon promised to recommend a grant of ISO. School Elections.—We are to have two school elections this year. This is owing to tho separation of the Waitokauri school district recently constructed from the Ohincmuri district. There will be an election in each district on the 28th inst., and another, the general annual elections on April 2lith, Lit'KXSisu Elkction.s.— There is a little stir also, re the forthcoming licensing elections in Eebruary. The two parties are already doing a little quiet organisation. The triennial poll under the "local option" clauses, takes place in March also. Calhoun ian Thistle.—There is one very serious matter which I have to report, that not only interests this district, but all those surrounding. I allude to the appearance of the dreaded Californian or Canadian thistle (Cirsium Arvense) which has recently shown itself in Paeroa. This noxious weed, which in many parts of California and Canada has mined many a farmer, and spread desolation where once grow magnificent crops, has only just been recognised. It has been in Mr Cassrell's paddock at Paeroa for some two or three years, and meanwhile has spread over about a quarter of an acre, choking and killing everything before it, before it was identified. Mr Cassrell hopes, with the assistance of the County Council, to eradicate it, by digging a six foot trench around it, and smothering it with coal tar and sand. . Mr Cassrell will bu extremely glad if some member of the Horticultural Society in Waikato will give him any hint as to this addition to our many agricultural curses. K.M. Coi'liT.— Among the cases heard in tho civil court on Wednesday was one wherein Mary Ann Nicholls sued Henry Allen for the price (£«), of a beast which defendant took by force from complainant's tnob while driving, alleging it to be his. It was very evident by the evidence offered that there were two beasts exactly alike in colour, size, sex, and two brands, N and H, on rump and ribs. Very conflicting evidence was brought, and each side brought receipts, &.C., to prove it was their beast. Einally tho case was adjourned to bring Mr McNicol from Waikato to identify the boast in propria persona. Tho moral of tho matter is that there should be some means of locally registering brands in order to avoid such similarity. In tho case at tho Police Court on tho samo day, where a local butcher was committed for trial ou a charge of stealing a bullock, the whole matter hinged upon the shape of an H with which the beast was branded. Educational Stai-t.—Education retrenchment does not in any way effect Ohmymuri. We retain four teachers at Paeroa, and the usual complement at the 0f,... three schools. A private school, ,assisted by the board, is on the cards for Karangahake.
