RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL

A meeting of the above council took place in the Council Chambers Raglan on 11th January, 1888. Present: Mr J. K. McDonald, (chairman), and Crs. Brooks, Barker, Hodgson, and Gibb. The minutes were read and confirmed. The proclamation of the county in the Gazette was read, and the correspondence was considered. SECRETARYSHIP.—Applications for the appointment of secretary were received from Messrs F. Gaudin, G. M. Kellow, A. Dye, H. Mullins, C. Obroyd, W. H. Wallis, A. K. McJannet, J. N. Pegler, and T. B. Somerset. The last three were then considered, and that of Mr Somerset being lowest he was appointed to the office. Finance and Other Committees.—The Chairman and Crs. Dando and Matthias were appointed a Finance Committee. It was resolved to appoint the following committees, viz.. Public Works, Bye-laws, and Standing orders, each to consist of three members, the Works Committee to consist of the following, viz: for Karioi and Te Akau, the Chairman and Crs. Dando and Matthias ; for Pirongia, the chairman and Crs. Barker and Hodgson; for Whangape and Onewhero, the Shairman and Crs. Brooks and Gibb; Bye-laws Committee, the Chairman and Crs. Dando and Matthias Standing Orders Committee, the Chairman and Crs. Dando and Mathias. Raglan-Waipa Road.—The Chairman was requested to communicate with the member for Waipa, asking for his cooperation in obtaining the sum of £200 voted by Parliament for the Raglan-Waipa road under the authority of the Raglan County Council for expenditure. Bank.—lt was resolved that the Union Bank of Australia, Hamilton, be appointed the bank for the business of the Council. Treasurer and Cheques.—The Clerk was appointed treasurer of the Conncil, and the chairman and Cr. Dando were appointed, in conjunction with the treasurer, to sign all cheques. County Offices.—lt was resolved that the County Chamber, Raglan, be the principal place for the transaction of the public business of the council, and that Tuesday in each week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., be the day for the transaction of public business. Travelling Allowance.—lt was resolved that the sum of 10s per diem be allowed as travelling expenses for each councillor. Land Revenue. —It was resolved that application be made to the Assistant Sur-veyor-General for the amount now lying to the credit of the Raglan County Council on account of deferred payment on lands sold in Whangape Parish, and also for information respecting any other amounts lying to the credit of any portion of the county. Dog-tax.—The dog-tax was fixed at the following rates, viz., for cattle and sheep dogs that are used for the same in a legitimate manner 2s 6d, and 5s for all other dogs not so used, and being over six months old, the tax to come into force after the commencement of the next financial year. Clause 21.—The Government to be asked to definitely state what is the meaning of clause 21 of the Counties Act, 1886. Sweet Briar, &c.—lt was resolved that in view of the great damage experienced by settlers from the spread of sweet briar and gorse on unoccupied lands, special powers be given to County Councils to enter upon lands for their extinction at the owner's cost in cases where the owners do not take the necessary steps for their eradication, and that the co-operation of all local bodies be requested for that purpose. Meetings.—lt was resolved that the meetings of the council be held alternately at Raglan and Whatawhata.—The chairman wished to substitute Hamilton instead of Whatawhata, but Whatawhata was chosen. Notice of Motion.— A notice of motion that the rate for outlying districts be ¾d in the £ was given.
