Town Loaiid. —The monthly meeting oftli town board was held yesterday evening. Present: The Chairman, unci Messr.Frazer, Ilott and Gavin. The minute* ol the previous ordinary and special mretiiisrwere confirmed. A circular from Welling' ton was read, intimating that Government will cease making payments ne.\t_ financial year under the Crown and Native Lands Batinf? Act, 1882. A letter was reeeived from Mr J. A. Miller, relative to rating matters, in connection with which ii was resolved, on the motion of Mr Gavin, seconded by Mr Ilott, that the board take no further action in the direction of levying a rate during the current financial year. Gravel pit: The chairman and clerk were authorised to confer with the engineer re garding the most suitable place for a gravel pit, and to take steps to secure the same. Water supply : A discussion occupying some time took place relative to advis abilitv of taking immediate, action in thiimportant matter, and the following resolu tion, proposed by Mr Ilott, and seconded b\ the chairman, was adopted: " That tli members of the board form themselves int' a committee to consider the scheme ol water supply for the town, and that thej meet to fully discuss the question on Monday, the 115 th insl., at 7.30 p.m." Footpaths : The chairman was requested t.i meet the engineer to consult with him re specting the formation of footpaths ami other necessary works; estimates of tin* same to be prepared and submitted at next monthly meeting. Mr Ilott asked that the discussion of notices of motion 1, 2, and 3, standing in his name, relative to alterations in the by laws, and adjourned from the previous meeting, be further adjourned, the board having decided to test the legality of the by-laws at an early date. Discussion adjourned accordingly. The rest of the business was of a routine kind. Film.—A tire, which was fortunately suppressed before much damage was done, occurred early this morning in a cottage belonging to Mr W. Wilkinson, situated near the" post-oifke, and occupied by a person who lately arrived here. It is supposed the interior woodwork became ignited by some embers falling from the fire-place. The flames were quickly observed, and with tlie assistance of some neighbours, were soon extinguished, the injury being confined to the end of the building next the chimney.
