THE LATEST,
Splendid Returns : 185 Ounces to the Ton. Received January 11th, 1 p.m. SyiiSEY, January 11. There is a great boom in the silver market here and also in Melbourne and Adelaide. The excitement here is most intense, and nothing like it has baen kuown for years past. It was considered an extraordinary thing when some time ago the Brokers' Hall Company's shares went up to £200, but yesterday they reached £223 here, and at Adelaide they went ten pounds higher, the greater portion at a jump. It is known that holders have made splendid profits during the last few days, and brokers in Sydney have not been so busy for years as they were yesterday, whilst one Melbourne Stock Exchange tirm did the largest business they ever effected in one day. Considerable excitement was also caused here by the publication in papers of a new discovery of silver deposits at Fait-field. It appears that the existence of the deposit has been known for some time, but the discoverers kept it to themselves until they secured the lease of the grounds. The average of 93 assays ia one hundred .lud eighty-five ounces to the ton. A mining expert from Silvcrton thinks there will be twenty thousand people on the ground in two years. Fairfield is situated on the Uhrcnce River, not far from Boorook Silver Mines, in the Boorook Ranges, and the districts are well wooded and watered.
