Auckland, Last Night. The mail steamer Alamoda arrived at I o'clock to-day, with European date* up to December 16th. General Summary. The "Eighty" Club gave a banquet to Earl Gr.invillo in London on December 13th. In the course of his speech, the Earl said if the Government undertook tu settle the lii-h question upon a reasonable basis of self-government they would' have the hearty support of the Liberals. Advices from Berlin, December 13th, say the war scaro caused by Russia mobilising their troops on the Austrian frontier, h|s completely abated, and prices on the European Bourses were steady in consequence. The British Cabinet has decided to reassemble Parliament on February 7th. The Governing* thas requested MorHson, the leader of the crofter movement, to goto British Columbia and report upon suitability of that country for settlement. If the report be favourable the Government will assist the crofters to emigrafe to that country. Mr Balfour was vigorously hissed during his address at Manchester, on December 14th. Because of the warning of a plot to assassitate him, the hall was strongly guarded, and a line of police extended from the Town Hall to the Hotel where he alept under guard. A verdict of murder was tound against Dan Doherty for killing Colonel Graham, by shooting at the Criterion restaurant, Piccadilly, by coroner's jury on December 13th. John L. Sullivan, the American pugilist, boxed with Joe Ashton, in the presence of the Prince of Wales on Dec. 7th. The Prince is represented to have been delighted with the Bostonian's work and presented him with a watch. A meeting of the Baptist Union will soon be held to take action concerning the withdrawal of the Rev. Mr Spurgeon from that body because he does not consider it on an evangelical basis. A number of Bradford firms have received notice from correspondents in German}' and other countries on the continent that Volapuk, the new universal language, will be used after a certain date. Twenty-two persons were drowned in a hurricane on December 10th off the Orkney Islands. On December 7th Mr Labouchere received from an unknown correspondent two bags containing 10,000 new sixpences, accompanied by a letter asking that he distribute the coins among the children of the London workhouses and their schools. Lord Salisbury sold on D;eember 2nd the fee simple of his property on Cecil and Salisbury-streets, in the Strand, London, comprising over 53,000 square feet, for £200,000. When Mr Br.icllaujfh was cross-examined in the London Police Court on December 2nd, in the Graham (Trafalgar Square) case he was asked by the counsel for Government whether he remembered the meeting in Trafalgar Square in 188.1, which resulted in a detachment of the crowd looting shops. He replied, " Yes, the meeting was got up and paid for by Lord Salisbury. I have seen the cheque." Lord Salisbury promptly pronounced the statement unfounded. A shock of earthquake was felt at Chorley, County Lancaster, England, on the morning of December 2nd. Buildings were shaken, and people left thoir houses in a fright. Mr P.-irnsll is living incognito at Brooklyn in Kent. Thn Belfast Orangeman have petitioned Government to disqualify inambers who have been imprisoned, from sitting in Parliament. The Right Rev. John Power, Roman Catholic Bishop of Waterford, died on the sth December. The London Times of 13th December (fives the revelation of a Parnellite, to the effect that 200lbs of dynamite are stored in London to resume the policy of destruction"

The Knights of Labour organisation in the United States is in dmperate straits, caused by decreasing membership. G. R. Hoyt, a citizen of enterprise in Florida, was shot dead recently by one C. R. Cook, who objected to the piano playing of Hoyt's wife. Gen. Bond, a wealthy Harvard student, committed suicide on December 13th. The causes are complications with two women, both of wnom he had engaged to marry, and a sense of humiliation at having been " plucked" in his college examination. The earnings of the Canadian Pacific Railway {'or the week ending November 21st, 18S7, were 292,000 dollars, as against 247,000 for the corresponding period last year. Henry George will not attempt a labour presidential campaign next year ; first on account of its expensiveness, and second because the turmoil of a preat political canvass will detract attention from the real merits of the labour onuse.
