AN EXPLANATION.

TO THK KIHTOIi, Snt. —With reference to you l- remarks on a mutter wiitten by me and published in the Herald and Tmk Waikato 'l'imks, re Matuta natives and tlmir doings, 1 am sorry and surprised Unit you should have taken tbo trouble to have written on this matter, seeing that you know nothing about it except as you say fioin what you have beard. Two of my milking c nvs came home a few weeks ago with both the calves branded with maori brands. Mr Thurston’s horse was taken and kept away two days by tlie natives because he would not pay them bl for one day s washing done by some of thoir women. I did not blame the police nor those immediately above them, but Ido blame thedovernment of our country, and I think they well deserve it for showing a lenience to natives which they do not, extend to Kuropcans, Re Te Kooti’s matter at Makolu, he did ride his horse up and down on the verandah of the Star Hotel wdiile ho was drunk. And if you know that gentleman as well as 1 do yon would have very little to say in Ids favour. *l*oll also say the proprietors of papers sh mid bo more careful what they publish from me. Ido not write often to the papers, lint when I do, I can safely say I am thoroughly ac'piaintcil with the matter lam writing on.
