RAGLAN.

County Council.— A special meeting of the Raglan County Council was held in the Council Chambers Raglan at noon. Present : The chairman, (Cr. McDondald), Crs. Barker, Brooks, Dando, Gibb, Hodgson, and Mathias. The chairman read from The Waikato Times, notice by advertisement calling the meeting, and that it had been inserted four times. The secretary having read the minutes of last meeting they were confirmed. The chairman in an able speech proposed the following resolution of which due notice had been given. “That this Council do bring the whole of the provision of the Counties Act 1886, into force within the County of Raglan, in accordance with clause 19 of the Counties Act, 1886.” The resolution was seconded by Cr Brooks, who, in a speech of great breadth and force, supplemented the remarks of the chairman in favour of the resolution. At this stage of the meeting an adjournment took place. On resumption of meeting Cr Barker proposed the following amendment, which was seconded by Cr Hodgson, viz., “That it is not desirable at present to bring the Counties Act into force within the County of Raglan.” Cr. Barker, in proposing the amendment, brought forward many arguments in its favour, and against the working of the Counties Act, as proposed by the resolution, etc. The Chairman put the amendment to the council, and it was lost, Crs. Barker, Hodgson and Matthias voting for it, and against it, the Chairman (Mr J. K. McDonald), Crs. Brooks, Gibb and Dando. The resolution was then put to the council and carried. Proposed by Cr. Dando, seconded by Cr. Gibb and carried, “ That the chairman notify to the Colonial Secretary that the Counties Act, 1886, has been brought into force within this county by resolution to-day.” This completed the business. It is expected that the Comity Act will be proclaimed by the Governor before the beginning of next year. Tenders will be called for a clerk for the county. The next meeting of the council will take place on the 11th January. 1888. The utmost good feeling prevailed, and all the councillors expressed a determination to do their best for the interest of the whole county.
