CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held on Thursday at 3 p.m. Present: The Mayor (Mr. Gwynneth) Councillors Gillett, Bond. Ferguson, Webber. J. R. S. Richardson and D. Richardson.—-The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the correspondence was then taken. The Victoria-street fences.—Replying to a request of the Council that he would remove the fence of allotment 94 farther back from the street, Mr. Thomas Nixon wrote asking them to reconsider the matter, and also asking why he was singled out to do so when there were others whose fences projected as much as his. The Mayor said Mr. Nixon was aware that the fence was being put on the footpath at the time it was erected, for he (the Mayor) had pointed it out. Or. J. R. S. Richardson said Mr. Nixon had spoken to him about it and he certainly thousrht that Mr. Nixon believed the fence to be on its proper line.— Cr Bond said there seemed to be a doubt, as to which of the two surveys was correct. One gave the line on which the present fence was erected, and the other, a distance of 2ft lOin. further back.—The Mayor said the letter was the correct one, and for the purpose of testing the feeling of the Council he moved, “That the surfaceman be instructed to remove the obstructions from the footpath, opposite allotment No. 94 in Vic-toria-street.—Seconded, pro forma, by Cr Bond.—Cr Ferguson proposed as an amendment, That the fence be left as it is, fur the present.”—Seconded by Cr J. R. S. Richardson, and carried. Repairs to Footpaths.—Replying to a demand that he should at once put the footpath opposite his hotel in order, Cr Gillett wrote saying the curbing bad been injured by the Council causing the drain to be deepened, consequently he did not consider himself liable. After a short discussion it was referred to the Public Works Committee to report upon at the next meeting. Installation of the New Mayor.—The Mayor said it would be necessary to hold a meeting of the Council on the 2lst instant, for the purpose of installing Cr. James Hally, the Mayor elect; at a later period he intended moving that the Council adjourn until that date. It was resolved to leave the remaining portion of the correspondence together with the report of the Public Works Committee to be dealt with at the adjourned meeting. The Vacancy in the Council.—The Returning Officer was instructed to take the necessary steps to fill the extraordinary vacancy that had occurred by Or. Hally being elected Mayor. Caretaker op Public Halt.,—Tenders were received for the office of caretaker to the Public Hall. The clerk had prepared a specification, detailing the various items for which different prices would be paid. Cr. Gillet thought Mr T. L. Cox the most suitable applicant, as he understood the management of scenery, etc., and would be able to do any little repairs.—The Mayor said that Mr Buckland had really done the work although it had been in his father’s name, he therefore proposed that J. W. Bnckland’s tender be accepted.—Seconded by Or. Ferguson and carried unanimously. Notice op Motion.—By Cr. Bond that at the next meeting of the Council he shall move that in future the meetings be held at 7 p.m. instead of three p.m. By Cr. J. R. S. Richardson, that steps he taken to reduce the number of horses and cattle upon the town run. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—W. Bartlett, £1! 15.5; H. Buckland, £1 2s ; T. Wells, 5s ad ; J. W, Merrick, 3s Od ; R. Stewart, £3 2s. The Council then adjourned until 3 p.m. on the 21st inst.
