DEFEAT OF THK GOVERNMENT.
[EV TEi.E<:ium. | [The following was issued as an Extra from this office yesterday morning ; —j \\ H.U NOT* IN, Wednesday Morning. Tiik Government was defeated early this morning on the Represent, on Act JSS7, Amend ment Bill, • en in Committee-. This being one of a series of policy measures, the Covenimcnt reported progtess between 2 and -‘5 a. in. A meeting of the Government supporters is convened for 11.30 this morning. It is rumoured that unless the amended clause can lie remedied so as to he acceptable to the Government they will resign. The amendment was carried in a thin house, the members voting being 30 and 31, several Government supporters voting with the Opposition. The Government are determined to carry this Bill or vacate the Treasury benches, feeling assured that unless the measure becomes law this session it never will during the life of the present Parliament.
