POLITICAL NOTES.
[CV TEI.EIIRAI'II. —OWX COKIIESI'IIXDEXT. 1 The Protectionist Meeting'.
Wku.isuton, Monday. Another meeting of the Protectionist party was held this morning, for the purpose of receiving the report of the deputation appointed on Saturday to ascertain the views of the Premier on the subject of tariff revision. The attendance was not large, about “1 members being present. A resolution was carried that the Premier’s reply, in which be refused to alter the tariff lids session, was unsatisfactory. A committee was appointed to report to a future meeting as to the course which it was advisable to take respecting revision of the tariff this session. The Auckland protectionists, who support the (lovernmont have distinctly declined to take any part in an amendment which would be hostile to the (fovernment, and they have withdrawn from the whole business. The protectionist party, however, have determined to take a vote on the matter in some shape or other during tho present session.
Midland Railway Committee. The committee met again this morning, and agreed to insert a danse in the contract to the following etfect: “ The Government may in anticipation of the company claiming land in different parts of the reserved area make arrangements for the sale or other disposal of the same on terms approved by the company.” The Financial Debate. i t is still uncertain when this debate will close, as so many members wish to air their eloquence on the subject before a division is taken. The retrenchment cry is quite a secondary affair when members desire their “ words of wisdom” to bo recorded in Hansard. The Revision of the Tariff. Tlie whole of the Wellington Press condemn the action of theextreme protectionist party in the House in endeavouring to force a revision of the tariff this session. The Press, in an article, concludes thus : tt is not a question of free trade or protection ; it is solely a question of Atkinson and retrenchment, or Vogel and taxation. We are convinced that the new Parliament, unversed as they may lie in the tricks of party, will bo able to discern that plain issue, and to adhere to a rational and patriotic course respecting it.
