WAIPA COUNTY EXPENDITURE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—l observe In the general account of tho Waipa County Council the cost in salaries amounts to £3lO odd a year. Surely that is an extraordinary figure to pay for all there is to spend? Who gets it? Cap thp very few members who govern the present Council say truthfully that it is spent honestly ? Is there no back-door work. I will point put one where the rates were squandered, viz. ; in the appqiptinent of the present engineer, to whom "tho" billot was ' given, although the tender of a well-known qualified engineer was at least £-10 lower; but then ho was not of tho clique favoured by the leading member. However, I trust tho members of the next Council will not bo misled by favouritism. Some of the members might lin’d out whether tl;e clerk is too highly paid or not sufficiently, owing j,o tile irregularity in forwarding cheques to the workmen viz., one, two and three months after tho accounts are passed instead of within a week, as it should be. May I ask" the Council jf any of them go to inspect contracts' fcefprg fii.e work is passed.—l am, yours tru)y ( Waiu.v ULtOWW.
