HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Bn rough Council mot last night at the Council Chambers; —Present: The Mayor, and Crs. Knox, Sarnies, Jones, Tippen, Coates, Yon Stunner and Bell. The minutes of the last meeting and subsequent adjourned meetings were read and confirmed.
Correspondence inwards was read and disposed of. Tuackery-stkekt.—Dr Kenny and others asked that this street passing by their properties be formed, and made fit for traffic. Referred to Works Committee.
Domain Lands.— Mr Macgregor Hay wrote enclosing a letter from K. C. Martin, a lessee of some Domain Lands with reference to arrears u£ rent. Referred to Legal Committee. Survey of tiik Lake- -Mr Cusson wrote to say that no survey of the lake existed upon which he could work, and that an entirely new survey would be necessary, and asked that someone should point out to him the old level of the lake. Crs. Jones, Knox, Tippon and the Mayor were appointed a sub committee to act with Mr Cussen.
Vincent's Drain. —The Mayor reported that the committee visited the drain, and had been unable to see Mr Vincent; they had no recommendation to make.—After some,discussion Cr. Knox moved that the work be carried out, but the motion was not seconded.—Cr. Knox then moved that the engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the work on data supplied by Mr D. Campbell.—Seconded by Cr. Von .Stunner pro forma,—Motion was lost. —Cr. Knox moved that Mr Vincent bo informed of the Council’s decision in the matter,in reply to his letter of July 4th.—Cr. S.mdes seconded pro f iraia. He thought something should be done with the drain.—The Mayor moved an amendment that Mr Vincent be informed that the Council had come to no decision yet in this matter. He said they would have to undertake a general scheme of drainage.—Cr. Tippen seconded.—After discussion the Mayor withdrew his amendment.—Cr. Knox’s motion was then put and lost. Pousdkeepeh’s Report.— The poundkeeper, in his report, stated that the lock at the pound had been broken, and a horse taken out.—Cr. Knox said it was time this tampering with borough property was. put a. stop to, and moved that a reward of £.j be olfered for any information that would lead to the conviction of offenders.—Seconded by Cr. Bell, and carried. Member of the Hospital Board. —The Council resolved to bold a special meeting on the fourth Wednesday of the month to elect a member of the Hospital Board. Annual Valuation.-—Cr. Knox moved that the remuneration for this year's valuation bo £lo. Seconded by Cr. Jones, and earned.
The G handstand. —Cr. Knox said ho intended speaking on the, matter of the Grandstand, but would defer it to another time.
Tenders. —Tiie Council then went into committee to consider tenders, Sc. CTtting on Ohaui'O Road.— H. Kelly, ,f(i 17-s lid (accepted); J. Coonibos, £S ; D. Mclntyre, Jill 10s (id ; Wilson and Mnnro, lid per yard; 11. Dellicar, £!( 7s (id; T. • limes, £lO.
Accounts.—Several accounts amounting to £37 Ss 3d were passed for payment. ITogress was reported, and the Council resumed.
H nrniKit Business.— At 10 o’clock a discussion arose, and a good deal of time was wasted about the legality of sitting any later to transact further business.—Cr. Knox wished to bring forward the baths question.— ft rs. Coates, .Tunes and Tippen loft the Council, as they considered it illegal to sit after ten o’clock.
The Laths.—Cr. Knox moved that the original resolution authorising the expenditure of £4O for the extension of the Hamilton West baths be carried into effect. —Cr. Von Stunner seconded,—Cr. Sandes supported the motion.—Cr. Bell thought that as the timber was procured and paid for, he would _ vote for the resolution.— The Mayor said he would vote for the extension of the baths and appointment of, a caretaker. —Or. Von Stunner said he had visited the baths, and was convinced it was necessary to have a caretaker, owing to the filthy state and obscene drawings lie had found there.—The motion was put and carried.
Works Committee.— Cr. Knox’s motion for the election of Works Committees for Hamilton East and Hamilton West was deferred to 31st inst.
Nohck oe Motion. —Cr. Bell gave notice to move at next meeting, “To alter ordinary Council meeting from first Monday in each month to second Tuesday iu each month,” The Council then rose.
