Thk County Elections.— The statement of an eminent man “that Man is an animal with a mania for getting up societies and placing himself at the head of them” was never so clearly exemplified as in the ensuing county election. Tor the Paeroa Riding there arc no less than fourteen candidates named, nearly all of whom will probably go to the poll. The number of candidates is the result of the widespread dissatisfaction expressed at the out going local administration. The ratepayers one and all, are disgusted with the way that their money has been thrown away. For example, the council entered upon the financial year 188(1-87, with a credit balance of follO. By sheer stupidity they managed to get an award made against them by the Auditor-dencral of £2OOO in favor of the Thames County, and to spend and hypothecate £SOOO besides, thus making the enormous sum of £7500 in one year. And nothing to show for it. No new works, roads or bridges. In fact things are left a little worse than at the commencement of the year. Anyway there is no doubt now but that the words Meue Mene Tekel Upharsiu are written over against the county chair, and that a new generation is about to take charge.
Mining News. —Everythin? at Whangamata appears to be very encouraging although there is nothing new to report. The same is to be said of Mari tutu, It is wise to say nothing about these finds until they have proved themselves to bo genuine on larger tests than mere assays, and as largo parcels of ore are to be tried in bulk from both places we shall soon be in a position to know whether or not the reefs are payable. Tin-: Waitoa. —Mr Clarkson, whose name is well-known in connection with the Bhotover of old time memory, passed through Paeroa from Waitaa cm Saturday •last. Ho brought several samples of likely-looking wash dirt from Gould’s farm, but there was apparently no gold in any of them. He states, however, that he had detected the “colour,” and thought that it was inadvisable to totally condemn the field until further investigations had been made.
Licensing Committee.—A meeting of the Special Oonnuissioners for the now Special Licensing District of Hikntaia was held at Paeroa on Saturday. Present: Messrs Lipaoy, Mitchell, Logan and Edwards. Two applications for licenses were heard, one from P. Bennett being withdrawn, and that of Janies IT. Walsh being granted for premises situate at Marituto, The license fee was fi.yed at £2o. IvAii.iNGAHAKK. Mining matters at Kurangahake are somewhat dull. The Diamond is sending 10 tons to the Thames for treatment at the Moonatairi Battery. The tramway to Bailey’s new mill is complete as far as tlic Crown. It is proposed to amalgamate the Diamond, Adelaide, Koss, Duhbo, Monastery' and Priory Mines with the Quartz Reduction Works, and boat the concern on the English market. This will probably be done.
