The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

THURSDAY , NOV. 3, 1887.

Equal and exact justice to all men, Ol whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political.

The Fiiiftuc’iiil Statement delivered on Tuesday night by the Colonial Treasurer has been very well received by the country. It is a plain and business-like exposition of the state of the finances of the colony, with a well delined straightforward policy by which to overcome the country’s difficulties. A perusal of the Premier’s speech, a complete .summary of which wo present to our readers to-day, will afford general satisfaction. The striking feature of the Budget is that the proposals of the Government can bo easily followed and understood. The great question of retrenchment is met with a firm hand, and reductions in the public services, from the Governor, the Legislature, and Ministers downwards, are to amount to the large sum of £300,000. No increased taxation through the Customs is proposed, hut the Property Tax is to he increased to one penny. The borrowing system is to cease, and the heavy expenditure on public works will he tapered off, hv works not immediately required being gradually stopped.
