Ix this issuo appears tlio halfyearly report of iho Bank of New Zealand for the period ending September oOih. The detenuinatiou of the directors to devote Ihe hulk of the profits to providing a Contingency Bund will no doubt prove a great disappointment to the shareholders, and in some eases may cause hardship, more particularly at tills period of depression. To the proprietary, in general, however, there is tins great redeeming feature, that this course of action will undoubtedly ensure a return to the payment of the normal dividend at the next half-yearly balance. In contradistinction to the tactics not infrequently adopted by kindred institutions, the hold and honest action of tho Board in thus facing tho position, unfortunately very generally experienced at the present time, most bo most assuring to the shareholders. Nor will this fooling be confined to the proprietors only, tho customers of the Bank generally will share it, as it must he patent that by their fiction in this matter the operations of the institution in dealing with their customers will not necessarily suffer any restrictions.
