Accomuxi; to a calculation made by a correspondent, who has taken the New Zealand Times’letters. M., (>., and IX to represent the views of candidates, the voting in the recent elections resulted as follows Ministerial candidates, 41,372 votes, Opposition 511,328, and Doubtful 15,508. Tile largest Government vote was Canterbury 12,(140, and the largest provincial vote for the Opposition 11.440 from Auckland. Mr Mills, of I’ort Chalmers, had the largest majority 704, and Sir Julius Vogel with 41)4 came next, while Mr Valentine, tor Waikaia, had the smallest majority—one. Candidates who represent a minority of the voters in their respective districts are —Mr Peacock (Fonsonby), with 500, the other two candidates polling between them 737; Major Hamlin (Franklin South) 521, as against 735; Mr Withy (Eden), 701 to 783; Colonel Fraser (Thames), Cs!>, as against (ISO polled by his two opponents; Mr Kelly (Tauranga), 517 to 554 ; Mr Graham (East Coast), 74(1 against 000; Mr Tanner (Hawke’s Bay), 005 as compared with SS4, polled by his three opponents ; Mr W. G. Smith (Woodville), 033 against 1220; and Mr Percival (Christchurch), 707 to 805. At Akaroa Mr MeCregor had 42D, his five opponents polling 580 between them. At Lincoln Mr O’Callaghan polled 043 and won, 070 being split against him, and at Roslyn Mr Ross got in with 583, while 707 votes were recorded against him. In Invercargill Mr Feldwiek had only 350 votes, and ins four opponents between them secured 051. Dr. Hodgkinsnn, for Wallace, becomes an M.H.K. with 440 polled in his favour, though against him and for other candidates 782 votes were given. Mr Valentine with his one of a majority represents 424 votes, but 750 were polled by the opposing candidates. The Waimea-Pictoii seat gives an astonishing result, an Opposition candidate, Mr Seymour, won by four votes from Mr Harkness, the numbers being 44(i and 442, while the third man Mr .Mills had 413. There were thus 1105 Ministerial votes thrown away, while the elected member only had 44ii. At Wairau Mr Dodson is victor with 52(1, but against him two candidates polled 700 Votes, and for the Taranaki seat Mr Merchant goes to Parliament, though lie had only 352 votes out of a total of 052 pulled. Mr Marcimnt had the •smallest number of votes of all the sneces—fill candidates, and Mr Coimie-s tor Crey mouth the highest. 11-s,—Yeoman.
