AN ALMOST FORGOTTEN TRAGEDY REVIVED.

“ Murder Will.Out-” While Herbert Lyons was cutting firewood in Turnbull’s hush, East Road, near Invercargill, last Saturday, he came across wh-at were unmistakably human remains. The police were immediately communicated with, and Constable Ferguson proceeded to the spot. He found the hones of a human skeleton, besides an elastic boot, the buckles of a pair of braces, and some clothing in an advanced state of decay. The size and forms of the hones indicate that they are those of a fully-developed adult. The body must have lain there for many years. There was nothing to point to the identity of the deceased or the cause of death. The finding of the remains has brought to the recollection of “ old identities,” a mysterious disappearance which took place about 25 years ago. This was a man known as “ Yankee Clark,” a bushman, who lived in a hut somewhere in the locality. It is impossible, from the appearance of the remains, to say how long they have been lying where they were found, hut examinations by professional men would, no doubt, determine the sex and the probable age of the deceased. The supposition at the time was that Clark, who was believed to have had a considerable sum of money in his possession, had come to his end by foul play, and various surmises as to the perpetrator or perpetrators were in circulation after his disappearance.
