WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Waikato Comity Council was hold in the County Chambers, Hamilton East, yesterday afternoon. Present; Messrs Primrose (chairman), Seddon, Barugh, Johnson, Runciman, and Graham. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed, Correspondence inwards was read. Penal Clauses in the Countv Act.— A letter from the chairman of Lake County was read, bringing under the notice of the council the liability of councillors for acts which arc afterwards found to be illegal, and asking co-operation to procure an alteration in this Act, so as not to bear unjustly on men who give their time gratuitously to the county.—The letter was ordered to be forwarded to Mr Whyte, M.H.R., with tho Council’s approval endorsed on it. Waikato Patients Treated rv the Auckland H. and C,A, Board.— The Board had refused to supply a return of Waikato patients treated by them, and t!)0 Council desired the Government to compel them to do so, The return could bo furnished without much trouble by the secretary of the Board, Claim Aoainst Boroucih of Cambridge. —Tho Clerk of the Cambridge Borough Council wrote, stating that as the County Council had obtained an award made !.y tho Government auditors, which amount had been paid by tho borough, tho county had no further claim on them. The county clerk replied, sending in a bill of particulars. Peach Grove.— Mr J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., wrote, stating that he would endeavour to obtain the Peach Grove property as a site for an Agricultural College. Unlicensed Slaughtering.— Mr Cassidy, butcher, wrote complaining of certain parties slaughtering cattle in the parish of Kirikiriroa. apd selling them with; out a license, and asked for protection.’ The Cmjncil thought the Act required amending, as there was no check on unlicensed persons killing missing cattle, and decided to write to Mr Whyte to have the clause altered an as to afford protection and enable persons to kill for family use without a license. County Debentures.— Tho Treasury forwarded a schedule showing the value of the debentures issued by the county. f?upLic Abattoir,-—Jjr Poorest wrote,
on behalf of the farmers near Cambridge, on the question of the county granting a license for the erection of a slaughter-lionse to enable them to establish moat auctions and giving his reasons for the request. -Cr. Rnnciman said that what Mr Forrest wanted was to have .a public slaughter-limiso on tho Hamilton road.— The Chairman said that the Council if they established an abattoir could only lease it for three years, taking foes for the same, and they would be liable for any nuisance arising therefrom. (Jr. Beddon said the Council would have to bear the responsibility of nuisances arising from slaughter-bouses. The Council could grant a license if Mr Fnrre-t could show ho has a clean and suitable place for establishing an abbatoir, with a good supply of water. The Borough Council would not. undertake, to do so owing to the expense. It was resolved that the County could not undertake the responsibility, and that it was a matter for tho Cambridge Borough Council to deal with. Ekginekiw Rki'OHT.— I The Comity engineer, Air T. G. Bandes, submitted bis monthly report, in which lie described the state of the roads in the Rangiriri Riding, and recommended certain works to bo done on the Wairangi Swamp Road, at Gall’s gate, and the Matahnra road. Or. Johnson said these works were absolutely required, and as there were many people out of employment, he thought the work could be done cheaply.—The Chairman moved that the engineer be instructed to call for tenders for the works, and the new Council could deal with them.— Seconded by Cr. Seddon, and carried. Accounts. —The following accounts were passed for payment Tim Waikato Times, £2 Ills ‘ld ; T. G. Sarnies, £2l; F. Johnson, £llos ;W. Wade, (is ;] W. Bires, £3lßs. Leslie's Hill. —Cr. Rnnciman moved, that steps be taken to legalise the action in regard to the taking of land from Mr Hwen for widening the road.—Seconded by Cr. Seddon, and carried. The Council then rose.
