THE CODLIN MOTH ACT.
It will bo remembered by those interested in fruit culture in the district that the Waikato Horticultural Society took steps last year to consider fully the provisions of “TheCodlin Moth Act, ISS4,” with the view of making representations to the Government for amending the same .where necessary. A committee was appointed to draft an Amendment Bill with the view of getting it passed last session. The princi pal objects to be effected by the amendment were to make the Act apply to the whole colony, and to be compulsory in its operations. Owing to some misunderstanding, the Bill pevor came before the House. In consequence of the attention of the public being drawn to tills subject through our columns of late, members of the old committee were called together on Tuesday last, when it was decided to urge upon the Government the immediate necessity for bringing the Act into force. It was resolved that the member for Waikato should bo asked to undertake the matter. There was some difference of opinion at the meeting, whether, in view of the determination of the Government to deal only with the great retrenchment question this session, it would be possible to get the House to discuss the provisions of the amendment, seeing that it goes much more into detail than the 18S4 Act, and in some oases an entire change of principal is involved, or whether, as suggested by Mr Wells, it would not meet the ease at this juncture, simply to pass a short amendment Act for the purpose of making the provisions of the Act compulsory. After some discussion it was decided to send a draft of both amendments to Mr J. B. Whyte, leaving the matter in his hands to get the extended amendment Bill passed into law if possible, but if, in his opinion, there was any doubt about getting this done this session, then to fall back upon the shorter amendment, and by every possible exertion to secure the passing of it, in order to deal with the codliu moth pest this season.
