LOCAL ECONOMY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The general cry for retrenchment during the late election would seem to have had a good effect already on some of the local bodies. There is one Road Board at least in the Waipa county that has become so imbued with a spirit for retrenchment that, I am told, it is about to abolisli the old system of advertising and letting the work to the lowest tenderers, but now contemplate having work done in future by the Tamariki of the Road Board members. This is, I suppose, on the principal of fostering the local article, and finding employment, as well as pocket money, for the juveniles, and, as it were, keeping the money in the family. This way of retrenchment will not be approved of by many, more particularly when the material and workmanship are of an inferior description. But how is the plan to be carried outls the old Matuatano to pass the work for his young sons, and then in his place on the Board assist to pass their accounts for payment'/ I would respectfully advise the Board to be cautions in time, or the ratepayers may be tempted to bring the matter in another way before the public, which would nut only have the effect of compelling members to forfeit their seats on the Board, but also be mulcted in a fine of 4.T0, a penalty due for certain practices against tile provisions of the Road Boards Act.— Yours faithfully, A Jlatepaveh. October 21st, ]Ss7.
