HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The adjourned meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council took place last night in the Council Chambers. Present; His Worship the Mayor, and Messrs Knox, Sandes, Von Stunner, Bell, Missen, Tippen and Salmon. Cr. Sandes subscribed to the oath, and took his seat at the Council table. Hamilton Traffic Bridge.—' The following tenders for the repairs to the bridge wore opened and considered John Murphy, £2O; Alex. McLeod, till; J. Wright, £l3 7s fid (accepted). A tender was also received from Mr Drear, but was declared informal. (tAl.loway-stiieet.— Tenders tor this work were received from Israel Peveril, 3s per chain ; J. Deceit, os 10J per chain; Thus. Keep, os lid per chain. The firstnamed was accepted, the work to be under the engineer’s supervision. Baths Committee.— I The committee reported that the following tenders for the enlargement of the baths and erection of additions had been received.—Cr. von .Stunner moved that the report be received, and added that the committee had thought it best to refer the tenders to the Council for them to take into consideration whether the sum (£3O or £10) limited by the Council should ’*e exceeded, —Cr. Knox seconded, and the motion was carried.—His Worship said he thought the high price was owing to the uncertainty of obtaining tbs use of a pile-driver and barge, and thought that it the time was extended the price might be, lowered. — The Engineer corroborated the Mayor, and also stated that the state of the river would prevent operations being carried on at present. He recommended the work being postponed. Cr. Knox thought it was unnecessary to go to the expense of dressing rooms, Ac.—Cr. Von Stunner was of the same opinion.— Cr. Knox moved that the tenders be returned and that in the meantime the timber be stacked, and that the matter be deferred till the next meeting.—Cr. Salmon said Mr I’annell had stated he would withdraw bis offer if the work was not performed.—Cr. Von Stunner seconded the motion which "'as carried. The following arc the tenders ;—A. Dhain on Vincents I'hopeiitv. —The Council's solicitor, Mr McCregor Hay, submitted an opinion on this matter to the effect that he did not think the Council was liable to cover np the drain, though they might be subject to action for any accident through the drain in the roadway being open.—Cr. Knox referred to the nuisance arising from stagnant water in the drain.— Cr. Von Stunner referred to a general scheme of drainage, which would take in this vexed question. —A long discussion ensued on the matter and whether it would not be better to take the properly under the Public Works Act. -The Mayor thought it belter to appoint a sub-commit-tee to go over the ground, consider the alternate schemes, ami report at the next ■meeting, and nmvnd that Urs. Tippen, Knox, Von Stunner, and the mover bo appointed for that purpose.—Seconded by Cr. Bell.—Cr. Knox moved, as an amendment, that the engineer be instructed to draw np plans and specifications for the abatement of the nuisance. The summer was coming on, and lie thought the matter was urgent. —Cr. Missen seconded.—Cr. Tippen said it was not the duty of the Council to drain private property. The attention of the Inspector of Nuisances slum'J be drawn to the nuisance.—His Worship thought the work wopld be thrown away, as the roots of ti|B trees wopld grow up and choke the pipes.—Of, Sandes said jt was not an amendment on the motion, as it did not mention any report being brought up before next meeting.—-Cr. Knox wished bis name to be taken off the motion, as it was useless to have an adverse member. —The amendment was put and lost. —The Council did not consent to the withdrawal of Cr. Knox from the committee.—Cr Knox said if the Council persisted in doing nothing to the nuisance, it was useless his giving any of his time to the matter. He deprecated the vacillating action of the Council. The Mayor thought Cr. Knox was unjust to the Council, as It was clear that the Council was doing its best to find out what was the most feasible course for them to take. — Cr Tippen said he thought they had done their best. They had found the pipes at Hnntly were unsuitable, and that the cost of covering the drains would exceed the original estimate.—Cr Knox insisting on his name being taken off, it was acceded to, and the motion being put it was declared carried. Oii.uto Cutting.—No tenders were received, and the time was therefore extended.

Cr Knox moved, and Cr Von Stunner seconded that the committee be formed of the whole Council, with Cr. Tippon as chairman and three as a quorum.—Carried. Cr. Knox gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that a Works Committee for Hamilton Hast and one for Hamilton West bo appointed.—Finance Committee: Cr. Knox moved that no further pijiniqittees bo apjjoiqted, but this was not seconded. —Ors. Sarnies, Jones, and the Slayor were appointed.—Legal Committee ; Cr. Knox thought it was useless to have a Legal Committee, seeing how it had been treated in the past,—Crs.
