Mr • Iladslot e accept* <1 the presentation, and in thanking them for the gift, said, though he had suffered a smashing defeat in the elect ions ou lbb-3, yet recent elections indicated that public opinion \v;is rapidly changing, and he was hopeful of soon returning to power. The secession of Mr Gost-hen and other Liberals had tended greatly to weaken the Liberal party, hut those gentlemen were now placed in a most deplorable position in being connected with the Conservative party. Referring to the Irish questions he sitid a settlement of the difUculfy would be speedily arrived at. and lie was delighted that the Tories itad forestalled the Liberalsm bringing about that s-ltlement.
