It is necessary that the Railway Reform League should again take active measures to urge upon the attention of the legislature the necessity of making a thorough revolution in our railway policy. Major Jackson is pledged to support a trial of Mr Valle's system, and although Mr J. B, Whyte differs with Mr Vaile on the details of the scheme he has stated most emphatically during his late candidature that reform is required, and there is no doubt he will use his influence towards that purpose. A committee of the House, however, has already recommended a trial of the Valle scheme ; the League should again take up the question at that stage and press for a trial, which will alone test the soundness of -the principle set forth by Mr Vaile. If the interior of the colony is to be peopled with a thriving population, it is one of the first essentials to provide them with cheap facilities for reaching the most profitable markets. The existing transit freights do not afford these facilities; on the contrary, they are simply prohibitive, choking all agricultural and pastoral enterprise.
