Yours obediently, W.M. JACK-SON. Kiiiikilii, 3rd October, 1887. rjiQ THE ELECTORS OF WAII'A. Gentlkmkn, —Now that the Ballotbox has decided who is to represent the Waipa constituency in the coming parliament, 1 hog to tender my most sincere thanks to the noble few who have supported me to the end. That I have not linen -successful, is not because of want of confidence in me on the part of the Electors, nor being less respected, neither is it because my political programme was loss satisfactoiy than that of my successful opponent ; but rather because I did not sloop to beg for votes, give beer, or use any other means than the platform to gain them. I think the sooner the degrading practice of canvassing and shouting or using any other means to induce voters, as to how to dispose of their votes, either by candidates or any one for them, both after, as well as for a speellle time before nomination day, except on the platform, shall he regarded as bribery, and punished as such, the better. Another thing that requires alteration is the opening of the ballot-box by the Deputy Returning Ollieers. I hold that the keys of all the boxes should be retained in the possession of the Returningl Officer alone, and the result of the poll announced by him, ami not, as at present, by caeii Deputy. And now, in bidding the electors goodbye for the present, 1 again thank those who voted for me, trusting that those of my supporters who have not, this lime, will show greater enthusiasm on next ] occasion.
