TUB following ;titicK‘ Iphu t l ;*' Sn; Fr.mci'Co Xews Lcttor will li - in?ur< > t/» Waikaln fnnn»!r>: —Mi <’l ms .Siirtwk“f>-, l’re.sid(*iii f Urn Ckiiifnrnian 8m, r ar K*»iinery Company has be«n to Germany and Franco on a ini-sion, the imp -rtanco of which very few people reaii-o. He has been collecting information with a view to the founding of one of the grenfost nnterpr>»?s that can posdhiy take io«»t in tins country. The I Tilted States is the largest sugar-con-suming country in the world. At pm-a nt only about onc*twelfth of the sugar c-m----fiumed is produced in the country. The rest is imported, yielding to foreigiiTs an immense sum. The experience of Her many and France very clearly points out what great things can he accomplish' d in the matter of manufacturing sugar from locally-grown beets. That industry has in those, countries witnessed in the past few years a development that is simply marvellous. Mr Spr'ck.'l-, who is an expert sugar refiner himself, has been to Europe to investigate the methods of raising hects and the latest impror erneiits in the manufacture of heel-sugar. We may be very sure that, his impiiring mind will leave nothing unlearned that is within the grasp of human knowledge. He took with him Mr Waters, a draughtsman and practical engineer. and a careful examination has been made of all the best hpet-sugar refineries and complete sets of drawings made. The, letters received slate that Mr Spreckels is greatly encouraged, and sees no reason why the beet-sugar industry should not he made a very prominent one on this coast. About the growth of the beets there can be no possible doubt. The deep soil to be found in the valleys of the .State is peculiarly adapted to their culture, and once the sugar refineries cause a demand for them, they will be produced in enormous bulk and with a percentage of saccharine matter unknown elsewhere. Nothing is wanted but the application of capital and skill to the process of manufacturing. If Claus Spreckels succeeds in applying these, he will in the near future add on? of the greatest and most promising industries to the wealth of the coast.
