HORSE PARADE AT OHAUPO.
The annual parade of sires for this district was held in UncklumTs paddock, on Tu-js day. The entries were better in point "f numbers than for some years, twelve com. Sag on to the ground. Ammur the thoroughbreds Ingomar, who was in perfectcmiditinn takes fust place, a puMti-m ho hold hint year in the estimation of the public, and to which he was entitled, not merely on account of ills breeding, but for Ins quality, substance, and performances n->t only on the flat, but over timber. Hosh.uiki certainly have tlie best season of any of tho-e present. Billingsgate, the fastest inner in New Zealand, if iv>t, indeed, in Australasia, looked well, lit* is wiihuut doubt a good horse, and the criticisms passed on him by those who have a knowledge of horse flesh-were very favourable. He was placed second in the opinion of many, but I fancy Cap-a-pie as much as Billingsgate, the former may not peil»ao< lie as big, but few, i think, will deny that hesiunvs more quality, as he is almost Um perfection of equme beauty, nor is he by any means deficient in bone, he has plenty of it, but seeing the two one ha> the impression that Billingsgate s stock would be bigger than those of Cap-a-pie. Barthenopeusand Muskape-’r c-nupleied t ho list ut thoroughbred sires in the ring. Th j former was very much out of condition, thr latter being a young horse, and on hi* first season has his reputation yet to make. With such a variety to choose from breeders should have no difficulty in finding out of this lot one that will “ nick 1 it with their marcs, rarthcriopeus has plenty of b am. indeed I think the most of any in his class, but his utter want of fit condition told greatly against him. That is the time though to see a horse’s shape, and I believe this horse would, if mated with suitable marcs, get hacks with plenty of substance. It was said on the ground that many of his stock in Uisborue were running in coaches, and a horse that can get such stock is just what is wanted. Muskapeer, although t*» my mind the smallest of the thoroughbreds, was not by any means without Ins admirers, and it was claimed for him that he could measure as well as any of the others, but I should decidedly place Jngomar first and Billingsgate or Cap-a-pie second. Ingomar looked such a gentleman that after looking over the others one always turned again to admire him, though he is not perhaps so shapely a horse as Cap-a-pie, taking him all round he is very much superior to him. He has hind quarters and a loin big enough almost for a cart horse, and on looking at Iris muscular quarters one could easily understand how it was he was able to carry a good weight to victory over hurdles. Eoadsters. There were only two in this class —\ oung Merryman and Voting Stonewall -Jackson, Last “year I said that Young Mcrryin:.u would furnish into a good horse, and my prediction has been amply fulfilled. He U certainly a beautifully made horse, with splendid loins and quarters, and I believe the closest ribbed up of any horse in tin 1 Kelli. He has short legs and a very deep barrel, and from his build looks very much lower than hi! really is, as he stands very nearly, if not quite, fifteen three, which 'a plenty tail enough f-T any lior-e of tha’. class. Added to these stood qualities, hhas a temper as gentle as a lamb s. 5 oung Stonewall Jackson is too well known and admired to need much praise from me. lie was in good condition, and will doubtleshave a good season. Indeed, both the-.' horses should do exceedingly well this year. Clydesdales. In this class there were live—lvgin, R rutin Robin, Ronnie Prince, L arden Tain and Chieftain. With the exception of Rantio Robin and Chieftain, all these hare been in the ring before, and are, therefore, well known, Rantio Robin, although never exhibited in public before, i< also well and favourably known to many breeders. For some time he was owned lev .Messrs It. and J. Good Fellow, and was while with them well patronised, and deservedly so for his stock arc some of tinbest ami staunchest in Waikato. U wmiM have been a matter h»r .sincere regret if, when offered for sale, he had been bought bv some one out of thcdistrict ; fortunabdy bis services are still available for Waikato. It is a pity he was nut in better condition for it took somewhat from his appearance, but still lie looked the grand horse he really is. As active as a cat, ho was much admired when trotted round showing his beautiful action. His pedigree is said to J»* stainless, winch I believe, for be showed all the points of a pure Clydesdale. Without being an unwieldy uvergiowu mountain . { flesh, he possesses bone and subtance enough for all draught purposes, with the action of a thoroughbred, and a very gentle temper. Cbieftan is a young horse on his first season, and is a big powerful animal, calculated to get very big and heavy stock. As a breeder ha has his name yet to make, for he is only four years old, but I think he will do well as a sire. As regards the other three, nothing need ho said of them, as nothing, I could say, could add to their good reputation, which has been deservedly well established, and which no picking out by me of imaginary defects could lower. Taken as a whole breeders have good horses in all classes to select from. After the parade Parthenopeus, Chieftain and young Stonewall Jackson were olfored for sale by .Mr McNiool, but the bidding—which was dull—did not reach the reserves, which were £o’), £7.5 and £IOO respectively ; indeed, if I remember correctly, the only bid was one of £SO for Young Stonewall.
