ENTERTAINMENT AT TAUWHARE.
A magic lantern entertainment and miscellaneous concert was given in the schoolroom of the above township on Friday, September 3rd, to provide means for furnishing a gymnasium for the school children, and though the attendance was only moderate, no doubt owing to the unfavourable weather, yet the various parts of the programme were well received, particularly the magic-lantern scenes, which interested and amused the children greatly, and onr new teacher, Mr Aewcombe, deserves all commendation for the successful manner in which that part of the programme, which was under his care, was carried nut. The latter part of the programme commenced with an overture by Miss Walworth, the other principal performers being Messrs Newcombe, Lawson, Drinkwater and Innes. Some of the young ladies of the school also gave recitations. Miss Walworth played the accompaniments to Mr Lawson’s well-rendered songs, and Sir Newcombe’s comic readings caused much amusement. The usual vote of thanks to the chairman (Mr Diprose) and to Mr Newcoinbe, to whose energy the settlement is indebted for the entertainment, closed the proceedings.
