TONGAN AFFAIRS.
WARNING TO THE REV. SHIRLEY BAKER.
[press association. I London, September 1. In answer to a question in the House of Commons, Sir Henry Holland said the Government strongly disapproved of the Rev. Shirley Baker’s conduct in Tonga, and the Colonial Office would in future closely watch the Tougan reports. Mr Baker would be warned that if his influence led to the ill-treatment of the Tongans, ho would be deported.
[reuter’s telegrams.] London, September 3. The Daily News, writing on the Tongan dispute, says that the recent incident shows that British influence did not protect the native Christians who sought Prench protection, and annexation by Prance is possibly impending.
