N.Z. APPLES FOE THE ENGLISH MARKET.
Mr J. C. Browse, M.H.R., tells-nie ho thinks New Zealand could very well compete with Tasmania and South Australia in supplying apples to the English market during this time of the year. So called Australian apples (which really come principally from Tasmania, are to be seen at Covent Gardens and at all first class fruiterers in abundance just now, and realise high] prices. The demand for them during May, June and July wonld indeed be practically unlimited, if only a better mode of carriage could be advised. None but hich-class fruiterers whose customers can afford to pay tip-top prices care to touch them now. The wholesale rate for a ca«e is moderate enough, bnt oftener than not two out of every five apples are so badly bruised as to be useless for dessert purposes. The retailer consequently finds himself obliged to charge high prices for the good ones, or to lose money.
