Wellington, 3rd August 1887. A sum of between £7O and £BO, the Clerk stated, was still due from the Cambridge borough, for its share of the hospital and charitable aid contributions paid by the county before the borough was established.
The Clerk stated that a sum of £l3, interest on inscribed debentures, hail been [laid. The Engineer reported that the sills of the Narrow’s bridge were rotting, and gave alternative schemes of repairs, the cost of which varied from £lO to £BO. Cr. Johnson said that Mr Collins was very anxious that the deviation at
Hmitly should be legalised. The Clerk stated the Engineer was taking the necessary steps. A letter was read from several Wairangi settlers, protesting that the amount of subsidy, £B, promised for the repair of the Meremerc rend, and stating that the Meremore bridge was loosened and insecure. On the motion of Cr. Johnson, the vote of £8 was increased to £lO, and the council instructed the engineer to have, the bridge secured at once. The Cuukciiill Punt.—Cr. Johnson recommended that the punt should be handed over to tiie charge of Mr J. Graham and C. Gibb. The Chairman said tiie comity took the punt over fur the good of the Kaglan comity, therebeing no Raglan Council. Ho thought the council had done enough, and the best plan was to write to the Government to take it over. He asked Cr. Johnson, if the punt was handed over to Messrs Graham and Gibb, to allow the cost of working it and the responsibility to t>o a special liability on the Rangiriri outlying district. Ultimately a resolution was passed, proposed by Cr. Johnson and seconded by Cr. Runciman, that tiie punt bo handed over to the Rangiriri outlying district.
McCann's Abratoir.—Application for a license for public abbatoirs at Lot No, 3 Hautapu, wore received from Mr McCann.—The council feared it might lead to a nuisance and there was not a sufficiency of water.—The Chairman suggested that the applicant should bo content with an ordinary slaughtering license.—Capt. Rmiciman said the place was unsuitable.—The couneil declined to bring the Abbatoirs Act into force in the county. A by-law was considered, to como into operation on the 10th October, rendering any person driving or riding across any public bridge in the county, including tiie Narrows bridge, at other than a walking pace liable to a penalty net exceeding £5. The proposed by-law will be brought forward fur confirmation at next mooting. Cr. Johnson said as the council was in funds he would ask for certain works in the Rangiriri outlying district, viz. ; Metalling half the Swamp road, at a cost of £5 10s per chain, say, for 10 chains, and -10 chains lie formed from Gall’s bridge towards Rangiriri, costing about £ls ; that £lO be spent in repairs on the road from Taupiri to Hmitly ; £5 on road from Vincent’s farm ; £36 on a deviation to avoid the 27-chain swamp ; and £lO in repairing road near Wairangi school.—The Clerk stated the out-district was in funds to the extent of over £3OO. —The couneil decided that all the works, except the metalling of the Wairangi swamp road, should be done, and that the engineer’s opinion lie taken on its being sufficiently consolidated to sustain so heavy an amount of metal.
Accounts to the amount of £73 19s Id were passed for payment.
