THE PRINCESS OF WALES.
Tin; letters from Mrs C'ndylo contain reference to 1.1 u 1 Princess of Yales, whose nnrriiisin look place about three years before Mrs Carlyle died. This is what she wrote shortly after her marriage : The only interest. I take in the little now Piiiicoss is founded on her previous poverty anil previous humble, homely life, i ’nave heard some touching things about that, from people nominated with the Court. When she was on her visit to the <2neon after her engagement she always wore a jacket. The Queen said, 1 I think you always wear a jacket; how is that?’ ‘Oh,’ said little Alexandra, ‘I wear it because it is economical. You can wear it with any’ sort of gown, and, you know, I have always bad to make my own gowns. I have never had a lady’s-maid, and my sisters and I all make our own clothes ; I even made my bonnet.’ Two or three days after her marriage she wrote to her mother : ‘I am so happy. I have just breakfasted with Bertie (Albert her husband), and I have on a white muslin dressing gown beautifully trimmed with pink ribbon.’ Her parents were not so rich as most London shopkeepers; bad from U7OOO to £IO,OOO a year. That interests me, and I also feel a sympathy with her in the prospective bother she will have by and by.’
