HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the council was held last night. Present; His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Dey, Tippen, Hatrick, Bell, Knox, Groville Smith, Jones and Scott. The Public Buildings.— The Minister of Public Works telegraphed that he had instructed the District Engineer to inspect Le Quesne’s buildings, and report as to the cost of altering same to fit them for the purpose of public buildings. The Undersecretary wrote, acknowledging receipt of the resolution passed at the public meeting, and stating that no action would be taken without duly considering same. Footpath, Angiesea-stkeet. —Messrs Munro, King and Mayes wrote, applying to have this footpath gravelled.—Referred to the Works Committee, with power to act.
Hamilton West Drain.—Mr R. Edwards wrote, drawing attention to the state of the drain in Anglesea-street, as the effluvium arising therefrom was very disagreeable.—The letter was referred to the Works Committee.
Liverpool-street.— Mr R. Waite wrote, drawing attention to the condition of tins street since the furze had been cut down. —On the motion of Cr. Jones, the matter was referred to a committee consisting of Crs. Knox, Hetrick, and the mover, an amendment by Cr. Smith, seconded by Cr. Hatrick, to refer it to the Works Committee, being lost.
Surface Labour.— Mr H. P. McPherson wrote, stating that there would not have been so many applications for labour at last meeting had not one of the councillors solicited applications. He had only been on one month since the borough was formed.—Or. Jones said he was the councillor. All ho had done was to toll applicants to write, his object being to induce the council to lot all surface worthy tender.—The Mayor ami several councillors objected to the tone of the letter, and Cr. Knox said lie understood the Charitable Aid Board mot once a month, On the motion of Cr. Smith it was decided nut to receive the letter, it being understood that the whole question was being considered by the Works Committee.
Ooixingwoop street.— Mr T. G. Sandes wrote, asking the council to make improvements in the drainage of this street, and also to improve the footpaths. Cr. Tippon said it had been his intention at the last meeting to bring this work under the notice of the council. —Cr. Knox moved that the works required be carried out under the supervision of the Works Committee.—Cr, Jones seconded.—Carried.—The Works Committee were also instructed to renew the culvert at the junction of Knox and Anglesea-streets. Works Committee’s Report.— The committee reported, recommending than an extra man be taken on by tender for the next three months. They also reported on several small works completed and in progress. The foreman of works reported that various watertables needed looking after, and that in several places the planking of the traffic bridge required attention.—Cr. Knox moved that applications be invited for two surfacemen, one for the East and one for the West side of the river, at a wage of 5s per day.—Cr. Jones seconded the motion pro forma. —Cr. Smith moved, a.s an amendment, that the report of the Works Committee be adopted.—Cr. Scott seconded the amendment.—On being put to the council the amendment was carried, only the mover and seconder voting for the motion. —On the motion of Cr. Knox, it was resolved that any tenderer canvassing a councillor be disqualified.—The matters referred to in the report of the foreman of works was referred to the Works Committee to report. Vincent’s Drain.—The Legal Committee reported recommending that the drain be piped through Mr Vincent’s property. It was resolved that the report be adopted, the pipes to be obtained from Hnntly if possible. Poundkeeper’s Report.— The poundkeeper reported that the fens for the month were IT 13s, paddock fees 12s, dog registration, £1 ss. Total £3los. The report was adopted.
Accounts.—A number of accounts were passed for payment. Planting Reserve.— lt was resolved that the reserve at the junction of Victoria and Grantham-streets be fenced and planted under the supervision of the Improvement Committees. Cookhkad’s Grievance. Cr. Knox moved that as the fence of the cemetery reserve was insecure, the amount of the poundage fees incurred by Cockhead, 13s 6d, be refunded.—This was seconded by Or. Dey.—Cr. Hatrick moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to a committee consisting of Crs. Dey, Tippen and Ball. This was not seconded, and the motion was then put and carried, Crs. Scott, Ball, Hatrick and Jones voting against it. Hour of Closing. —Cr. Knox moved in accordance with notice that no fresh business bo taken in hand after ten o’clock.— The motion was seconded by Cr. Bell and carried, Cr. Scott only dissenting. This was all the business.
