MR RUSSELL'S QUALIFICATIONS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin —ln yours of the Ibth inst. appears a letter signed "Klcctor,” to which I would beg a little space to reply. Apart from the sophistical arguments employed in it, I must emphatically protest again-t it as being misleading. “ Klector charges Mr Russell with betraying the cloven hoof, and inveighs against him for not following the. piescnt (lovernmenl in every part of their programme. let ns assume for a moment that Mr llns.odl had given the present (lovernmeiit his unqualified and unconditional support, what would have, have been “ Klector’s ’’ feelings ? lie would simp, have let loose his “gush and declamation'' in the, following strain : Mr Russell has given his unmodified and unconditional support to a certain party, and pledges himself t" that party, so that if that party opposes his principles he will f„H„w it, what principles it may hold or even if it prove to bo a party of no principle whatever, and no doubt' he would fume and storm at Mr Russell’s inconsistency. lines ’’Mlector want a man to support a man through thick and thin, eveu if in opposition to his own judgment? If so let him vote for a candidate that will do so, and so lot him not vote for Mr Kussell. A’our correspondent further twits Mr Kussell with being an ad criptaridurn speaker, in plain l.nglish meaning that he is able to captivate the masses. Mr Russell must plead to this assertion, and Wednesday's meeting proved that he certainly did make a strong impression on his hearers. But is this not one of the strongest qualifications for a representative? If wo will have a man who, besides holding good views can expound and assert them with force in the House, then we would have a vast improvement on our late member.—Yours obediently, Elector Xo. 2.
