THE GALE AT WELLINGTON.
A SAD CALAMITY. (Nt TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Wednesday. A heavy gale of wind has been blowing here since morning, and, in addition to the loss already caused, it is feared that groat destruction of property will result. A most deplorable casualty occurred at Petone beach. The Gear Meat Company’s hulk, Jubilee, (parted her cables and was driven ashore. A boat was put off from the shore to try and render assistance, hut was capsized, and three men, named Ketley, Williams, and Ashton, are supposed to be drowned. Two others are safe. The hulk had About 4000 carcases of mutton, and some sides of beef on board, but these are not likely to be injured. The vessel is supposed to be quite safe, and very little sea is breaking on her. The Jubilee has two refrigerating machines on board, and the’ship and machines are insured in the in the Colonial Insurance Company for £IO,OOO.
