MR RUSSELL'S SPEECH AT CAMBRIDGE.
TO TUB KDITOK. Silt,—Air Russell gave us a very taking and Jesuitic s|u*(;cli hero on Wednesday night last, professing everything under the sun, and a groat deal mure. I listened to it with an amount of pleasure for a time, as it brought mo back to the days of frost and Jones, the Chartist rioters, and I felt as ill was oil years a younger man. lint on thinking it over to-day, now the glitter is gone olf it, there, is nothing in it, but a few promises of what Mr Kassel) will do (unaided) if we will only be foolish enough to place him on the “ floor of the House.” As a specimen of what yon may expect from him twelve months hence, take his shuttling reply to the question “is Mr tionld’s statement that a few months ago he, Mr Russell, had advocated the borrowing of £10,000,000” etc.” Mr Kunscll had forgotten whether ho did or not, but if Mr (build wmdd stand np in that room and say that ho did advocate it he would not deny it I (Mr Russell well knowing at the time ho said this that Mr (.build was notin the room), and the way he fenced the whole of the questions might be creditable to him as a diplomatist but not as a straightforward man seeking the sulfragos of the electors.
What guarantee have wo that in twelve months from now, or less, Mr Knssell breaks every pledge be lias given yon? when challenged with it, he will not tell yon, as he told the gentlemen who asked the question about Mr I'mild “ That although he remembered the conversation, he had forgotten all the details, and could not say whether ho had promised yon Retrenchment or not.’’ If he can forget all ho said about borrowing £10,000,000 10 or 1” months ago, how can you expect hiti. to remember a claptrap electioneering speech about such a small thing as retrenchment! even six months afterwards? Do not expect too much from him after such an answer, with so convenient a memory.—Yours respectfully, John (Iwvnnktii, July 14th,
