AN EXPLANATION.

TO TIIK EDITOR. .Sir, --Having heard that a well-known Cambridge man states that 1 cut him dead in Wellington, nnd that his feelingwere very much hurt by my dying -o, and having noticed it referred tu in a 1-kt.il newspaper, I write a few lines in explanation.

lu the first place 1 have never had the pleasure of being on familiar t-riu- with the gentleman referred to, so much so that we were not in the habit of exchanging salutations, and ] also have alwars understood that ho was politically opposed (as indeed he now is jto me. However, I noticed him in Wellington at the time referred to and looked hard at him to see if he wished to speak to me or get my assistance in the business which had brought him to the seat of Government. He made no sign, and I, being his representative,; took that as an indication that he not only did not desire my- assistance, but that he declined it. However, as I now find that I was mistaken in this, and I never in my life deliberately- tried to hurt anyone’s feelings, I desire to apologise for the slight which 1 unintentionally put upon him. I think all who know me will testify that what is familiarly called “ putting on side"—knowing a man one day- and cutting him tie*- next —is not a characteristic of mine.—l am. yours faithfully, J. B. Whyte. I’.S. Having also heard from the same source that I passed an old friend and supporter in New Plymouth without recognising him, I have written to him, stating that it was unintentional.
