TE AROHA.

(FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Te Aroha, Monday. Messrs Williams ami Chepmell, representing the Piako County Council, and MrJ. C. Firth, as one of the Battery Co., met on Thursday last for the purpose of endeavouring to arrive at a settlement of the point at issue between the Council and the lessees of the tramway, viz., the ■conditions that refer to tear and wear. The exact result of the meeting lias not yet transpired, but it is understood that no arrangement of the difficulty was come to, and the hitch as to the terms of the agreement consequently continues. In the Wesleyan Church, yesterday evening the subject of the sermon by the Rev. S. La wry was Drunkenness litscanse and cure. The preacher, in an able and earnest manner, dealt with the various phases of the question in its bearings upi n the social condition of the people ; and the remedies to he applied for its extermination. The discourse was most at. tentively listened to by a good congregation. At the close of the service the clergyman announced that Mr Elliot had been appointed as missionary to attend to the requirements of the Paeroa portion of the circuit. Such assistance was greatly naeded, as the circuit is much too large to be efficiently worked by one person. The arrangement now made, will enable tbe resident minister to devote the most of his time and energies to the cause of the church in the district.

■ MrJ. B. Whyte has -announced his intention of addressing the electors at Waitoa this evening. Although his political connection with Te Aroha may be said to have ceased, numbers of his old supporters who would like to have an opportunity of listening to him again and a good few of them arc likely to be present to greet him at the meeting to-night.
