MELBOURNE CUP WEIGHTS.
The Argus sporting oraclo delivers himself of his opinions regarding the weights for the Melbourne Cup. He regards the Handicap as a flattering one, although there are owners who consider themselves badly used. Ho points out that Trenton, with list Dlb for the Cup is better off than in the great Metropolitan, where he is awarded flat 12. Nelson is on a par with Trenton, while there was a difference of a pound between them in Arsenal's year. Trident has not been lot of lightly, having list Sib., a pound less than the top weight, the same as he will carry in the Metropolitan. Isonomy has been given a jump from 7st 1.21b to Sst 101b, which is not assuring to thn South Australian horse. Sheet Anchor is accorded a drop from fist to Sat Sib, which is also apportioned to last year’s winner Arsenal, who carried 181b less then. Spade Guinea’s performances justify the Sst Bib. put opposite to bis name. Mr Scarr gives him 41b more in the Metropolitan Stakes. The chance of Sardius does not look well with Sst 01b., and the pound difference between the son of Emulation and the New Zealander, Spade Guinea, is inexplicable. Silvermine has been increased half a stone, and one may bo quite prepared to see the black gelding run well, if not win outright after the many disappointments. The game little Ringmaster is nicely in with Sst 31b., and if well ought to be in the final struggle. His weight is 51b. more in the Metropolitan. Merrimu has no show with Sst; but Bohemian can hardly complain with 7et 131b., nr 131b more than he carried in last year’s Sydney Metropolitan. Ben Bolt last year carried 7st. 101b and he is now awarded an additional 21b. Bravo is nicely handicapped, and the same remark applies to Crossfire ; but the most attractive in the whole handicap is Meteor, with the handy weight Ist. 21h. Last rear he was weighted at 31b. more, and carried a half-stone penalty for the Hawkesbury Handicap. Bassing on, there come the thrne-years-olds Abercnrn and Matador. The pair met in the A.I.C. Champagne Stakes last April, when Matador, with an advantage of lOlh., defeated Mr White’* colt by a length. Matador, in the Melbourne Cup, has 31b. the best of Abercorn.
Previous to tlie Champagne Stakes, Matador had won the. Hawkesbury Rowley Mile Handicap with list. 12. up, and as lie is one of tlie improving sort, danger must be apprehended from the son of Mewminster. Mozart lias been treated with a 1011). reduction from last year, and now should be. Ids opportunity. Prisoo’s Melbourne Cup, weight is 7st. -Th., or llllb. more than lie carried in tlie last Sydney Cup. Impulse looks well at 7st. Taking a Jump to amongst tile bottom weights’ Affluence and Remus (Oat. lllb.)and Wentworth (fist. 101 hj.) would appear to have been leniently treated.
