POLITICS AT HAMILTON.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln a certain journal, whoso name need nut be mentioned to cars polite, there have appeared of late letters from “ A Correspondent ” under the above heading, and dated from Hamilton. In one of those, dated Friday (Ist lost,), tho Railway Reform League and Mr Whyte both come in fur a “lambing down.” The funner are. taunted with inaction in order not to hinder Mr Whyte’s candidature, and that, “recognising they were between tile Devil and the Deep sea (tho writer by the bye docs not say which of the two is Mr Russell), have come to the conclusion that they will try and extort a retraction from J. B. W.,” and thus, as he goes on to say, “get the League out of a nasty mess.” The League is told that they are in a dilemma, “having a pronounced supporter and their most energetic member (Russell) as a candidate, whilst the other (Whyte) is an out and out opponent.” Now, Sir, one word as to the pronounced advocacy by Mr G. W. Russell of Valle’s scheme. Mr Russell has already done what he supposes Mr Whyte is about to do —‘turnabout and wheel about and jump Jim Crow.’ When speaking at Hamilton, he made a reservation in his adherence to the scheme which leaves him perfectly at liberty to back out of his professions altogether. He would have Vaile’s scheme with the principal feature struck out. Ho does not believe in tho long-distance stages, and these Mr Vaile would never consent to eliminate from his scheme. Without them his scheme would be no scheme at all. — Yours truly, No. 8.
