The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

TUESDAY, JULY 5, 1887.

Enual and exact justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political.

The objects of the proposed Waikato Political Reform Association are sot forth in another part of this issue. They are simple enough and clear enough for the meanest understanding. To secure retrenchment and resist further taxation ; to promote the purity of legislation by the reduction of the number of members of both J louses, and to obtain

inimndiatf! and thorough reform in Uii! iiinipigoiiieiit of our railways, is a programme suitable to men of all classes and all parties. The cry for retrenchment is no mere electioneering catch-word, hut the heartfelt utterance of every man who thinks and feels. For many years we have allowed ourselves to ho intoxicated hy dreams of plenty and prosperity, hut at length the country is downright sober, alive to tin; dangers of its position, and prepared to face them. The course proposed to be followed on Thursday is sufficiently indicated in the draft resolutions. The mooting however, is not intended to servo as a vehicle for transmitting a series of cut and dried motions, but rather for the full and free discussion of all matters affecting the political welfare of the community. There are many matters in connection with which reform is urgently needed which are not even referred to in the programme. Of these two at any rate, education and land settlement, arc certain to receive some attention Upon these points we have already indicated the line wo shall take up, and we shall now content ourselves with bespeaking a full attendance of settlers from all parts of the two electorates at Thursday’s meeting.
