THE HAMILTON PUBLIC BATHS AND THE ENGINEER.
TO THE HDITOR. Sik,— Having been informed by several burgesses that it has been asserted by cor? tain pdrties in the borough that I received somewhat over £40.(forty pounds) from the Hamilton Borough Council for designing the public baths and superintending the 'erection of the same, I beg leave to say that the statement is a wilful and deliberate falsehood, and must have been made simply for the purpose ot injuring my reputation by some contemptible, cowardly enemy. The borough books will show that I made'a written agreement with the Baths Committee to do the whole of the work for a commission of 5 per cent, on the expenditure. The accepted tender was for £222, and the extras for putting platforms round the baths amounted to £11, or a total of £233, and the amount of moneys received by me was £1113s. With regard to the road approaches to the baths, 1 had nothing to say to them, and received no commission on the cost which amounted, I believe, to £4 ss.—Yours truly, T. G. Sandes, Engineer Hamilton Borough Council. Hamilton, 29th June, 1887.
