VAILE'S SYSTEM.

TO THE EDITOR. Stii,— In my address at Hamilton last ! Monday I mentioned Mr J. Aitken Connell, a candidate for Eden, laid down as one of his planks that an immediate trial be given Vaile's scheme. Since then Mr Oonnell has written to the Press, and as he breaks new ground I would ask your kindness to mention one or two points of his letter (1) He thinks the average fare would sink to tenpence ; (2) if the Vaile system were brought into operation on the Auckland section, and not one single additional person travelled over the lines, the loss for 12 months would not exceed £22,205, even on the basis of lOd average fare; (3) as it would require only 2| tares under Vaile's system instead of one now to yield the present revenue, Mr Connell holds that at the very worst the loss on a trial would not be mora than £10,000. He adds: "The scheme has now, thanks to Mr Vaile's able advocacy, taken so strong a hold of the public mind .that a trial it must have." I will add, Sjr, that, as you pointed out some time ago, Vaile's system has been proved sound ■byevery method possible short of an actual trial, which opinion is very largely held. Is it to be accorded that trial ?—Yours obediently, G. W. Russell, Cambridge, June 25th, 1887. j
