TAOTAOROA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above board was held at the Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, on Saturday. Present: Messrs N. Hunt (chairman), C. M. Brunskill, H. J. Kallendar and 11. R. Brunskill.

The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed, Mr O. M. Brunskill read a specification that he had prepared for work to be done on the BridgwaterWaitoaroad. The work was divided into two contracts, No. 1 being for cuttings, and No. 2 for forming the road, and also for clearing a certain portion on either side of it. Mr Brunskill said he had gone very fully into the matter, and he thought the specification would embrace everything they required. He had also personally gone over the ground with the tenderers and had explained the work to them; so that there could not be any misunderstanding. The Board opproved what Mr Brunskill had done, and tendered him their thanks. The tenders were then opened and proved as follows : No. 1 contract, Richard Wattam, £24 ; Vicars and Co, £17 ; George Wattam, forming 5s 6d, clearing Is 3d ; Vicars and Co., forming and clearing Gs; George Wattam, forming 4s lid ; clearing 7d. Mr Kellendar said before they authorised the work to be done, he should like to know what the probable cost of it would be and also how much money they had standing to their credit. Mr Brunskill said 50 chains more or less. That was rather indefinite. Mr Brunskill said it would not exceed CO chains, and the cost would not—according to the lowest tender—be above £33. The clerk said they were " comfortably off" as they would have £190 to their credit after signing the cheques that day. It was then resolved to accept the tender of George Wattam for both contracts, his tenders being the lowest when taken as a whole. A discussion then took place about the Oambridge-Tauranpfa road. Mr H. It. Brunskill said Riohard Wattam had undertaken to keep it in repair from Bruce's hill to the Matftmata boundary for £5 per annum, but he had not done a single day's work upon it. The Chairman suggested that the clerk write to Watta.ro saying that if the road was not in proper order at the end af the term, the road board would do all necessary repairs upon it at his (Wattam's) expense. Mr C. M. Brunskill was in favour of the new deviation road, and suggested that what money thoy were going to spend, should be upon that instead of the old road, He thought £50 would finish the road as far as the suhool-honse. It was decided not to proceed in the matter. The Clerk was instructed to write the borough council oalling their attention to the bad state o£ the road from Bull's gate to the Karapiao bridge. On the motion of Mr H. R. Brunskill, seconded by Mr Kallendar, a rate of in the £ was struck. Several accounts were passed, and the metting closed.
