THE GENERAL ELECTION.

Waipa Electorate. TO THK EDITOR. Sir,—l am surprised that no move has as yet been made by any intending candidate for the above constituency. We hear that Major Jackson, " the perpetual candidate," is still in the field, but as yet he has not intimated to us that such is the case, and surely he must not expect to be taken on trust. We want to know his ideas on the present crisis. Is he in favour of the Stout- Vogel Government, or will he go in for a vigorous retrenchment policy, and pledge himself to assist in placing the finances of the colony on a sound basis, and guarantee to vote with any Government that may endeavour to rescue us from the slough of despond into, which we seem to be drifting. All these things we surely have a right to know from a man who professes to want to represent us in Parliament, and the sooner we are informed of these things the better we shall be pleased. I fully expected to have heard of a move on behalf of Mr Lake by his friends ere this, as it seems now almost certain that he is not going home, and after his actions during the past throe sessions of Parliament, and his. untiring exertions on behalf of his constituents I think that he should certainly be requested to come forward and again represent us. Straight-

forward, hardworking and enthusiastic nj his work-, surely we want nothing and I think Waipa will regret s it if they don't choose him in preference to "one who Beerns to think that ho has nothing to,do but keep on canvassing, (never having any defined a policy to'put forwaid) in oidti to get to Wellington as our representative.— 1 am, Sir, yours truly, No. 4. 'Hamilton; J7th Juno, 1887.
