"The age is wise," a poet sings : . ■ Then prithee, Age, solve me the riddle . Why"we ; miscall the name of things,' ■ And blandly dub a spade—a fiddle ! We,vaunt as purest "gold " our brass, ' —In wordy mazes', wildly ramble— Our I' credit-trading's " gall and gas, ,Oui- ."stocks and shares"—a high old '" gamble ! T.he clergy have their verbiage :— .'Acollege course is—"education," Preferment—but the " labourer's wage," - Andihental skirking—" toleration !" Our lawyer vows with upturned eyes ■' Delay is but the Law's due " caution," But why use " legal points " for lies, : "Costs" and "retainers " for extortion ! Statesmen " appropriate " (not steal), . And call a cloud of words—"a state- -,;•••' ment," While in the name of " common weal " The list of "jobs " show no abatement. But wherefore add to what i 3 writ ? —Our tongues, our Government both free " are— But "Age" (see verse one) please admit Either our Webster's wrong or we are !
