A Gambling Syndicate.—A colossal system of robbery by means of prepared packs of cards has been discovered at Casio, Monte Carlo, on April 20th. The proprietors of the tables have lost largely ; some accounts say to the tune of £40,000 in two months. Other despatches speak of the affair as a serious commercial syndicate formed to fight the tables on a system. Clerks and markers were employed to mechanically play all day long at the three roulette tables, exactly as described, and they astonished the "administration "by their success. Reports from Monte Carlo say some visitors have been in excellent luck of late,, and laree .winnings, are reported. An English couple, the husband being a lord, left on April 28th with a profit of £10,000. They had played for amusement.' The croupiers implicated in the swindle mentioned above were arrested on May sth L and tried.! One, who deals the cards, was sentenced to eighteen months, and the other severely reprimanded. The usual Sunday services are advertised in another column. The Piako County Council intend to •make a separate rato'of one farthing in tha £ in the Matamata riding. The Hospital Board invite tenders for carting, etc. Mr John Knox will sell at the Hamilton auction mart to-day, furniture, produce, mutton, beef, dressed fowls, cow, Calves, and a bay mare. Mr Duncan Ward, late of the Engineers' Department, Public Works, and a rasident of many years' standing in Hamilton, announces that he is prepared to undertake commissions in all branches of his profession, and we have no doubt he will secure a fair share of support.
