CURIOUS JUBILEE SCHEMES
The general movement in the direction of commemorating Her Majesty's Jubilee year has led to the presentation of many extraordinary schemes, but the people of Llanwenog, a Cardiganshire village, have gravely set themselves to carry out out a proposal which will hold a high place in the catalogue of Jubilee curiosities. Mr Goschen's speech the other night revealed the extent to which private individuals are urging their special ideas on the great subject. It is not long since a gathering of villages in South Yorkshire expressed their unanimous opinion in favour of having the poor rate lightened during the memorable year. A "Jubilee" meeting; fin a neighbouring Lancashire town recently drew forth unkind remarks about a tendency to perpetuate Queen Victoria's fiftieth year of sovereignty by means.of a "glorified pump.' . In Denbigh a new burial ground is considered the most appropriate local memorial. But the Cardiganshire loyalists have improved on this brilliant idea by resolving to provide a "Jubilee hearse." Whether the good people of Llanweuog expect a " run " on this lugubrious vehicle during the coming year is not stated, but they are reported to have congratulated a Mr Hughes, the originator of this remarkable proposal, on his "happy " idea, and appointed a committee to provide the hearse. There is a rather dismal story of the people of an American "Run" or "Gulch" or "Bar" making the appearance of the first hearse the occasion of a public festivity. The grave and solemn people of Llanwenog will hardly copy that procedure.
