The Waikato times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.
THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 1887.
Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or or political.
As we anticipated, several parties of natives arrived in Cambridge on Tuesday, expecting to find the Land Court sitting. Four came from Waikato Heads, and had scraped sufficient money together to pay their railway fare from Tuakau, and landed in Cambridge without a cent, fully expecting to find the court in full swing, and plenty of agents ready to provide them food and shelter. Hearing their pitiful tale, Mr J. M. Fra'ser—who, like the natives, had made a long journey to attend the court —wired Mr Ballance, explaining the case and asking for assistance on their behalf. "Up to the time of our going to press, we coulcl not learn of any reply having been received. We are pleased to learn that Mr Masters intends billing the registrar of the native court in Auckland for £5, for giving the natives in the neighbourhood of Cambridge notice of the adjournment. We think he is quite right in doing so, for when the authorities do not give notice until the last moment they cannot expect to get their work done for nothing. Someone should also be made to pay the Waikato Heads natives. They are largely interested in the Pukekura and Puahoe blocks, and should either have received timely notice or be well remunerated for their time and trouble. When the natives receive this sort of treatment, can it be wondered at that the judges in the Land Court are occasionally kept waiting for witnesses 1
