WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the board \Vas held at the Hamilton Borough Council Chambers yesterday. Present : Messrs Graham (chairman), Gwynueth, Primrose, Teasdale, Seddon and W. P. Chepmell.
The W aipa Contribution.—Mr Teasdale complained of the peremptory tone of the application to the Waipa County Council for the amount of their contribution. It was well-known that the only reason why the monoy was withhe'd wa< that the county was low in funds. —The Chairman explained that the lm:ird "'is anxious to get in the contributions in ordor to secure the subsidy.
Cl-AIMS NOT ENTEHTAINE!).—I'I rpfiovn.'i! to the claim made by the Auckland 15 i.ir l for the maintenance of a 'man ti un>'d Edwards, it was decided not to etirmxin it, as the man had not six months in the district. A similar deci ion wis arrived at in the case of a man named East, an out-patient at the Thames Hospital. •Endowments.—The Chief Clerk, Land Office, Auckland, forwarded a list of endowments in the Waikato district under lease as follows:—Lot 2'otj, Mangapiko, Nabbs and Davidson lessees, rent £8 yearly; 257, Mangapiko. J. Gibson, £3; 154 Mangapiko, H. and J. Goodfellow, £5 ; 51, Pukeknra, W. Scott, £10 ; 122 Komokorau, A Nicol £5 ; 137 Te Rapa, T. Hunt £5 ; 40 Cambridge East, <T. Wilson £7 10s ; 24 Cambridge East, J. H. Cushney £11 ;8G Pukete, Jas. Harker £5 8s 6d.—Mr G-wynneth said the board should lose no time in ascertaining to whom the money was paid.—The Secretary was instructed to write to the Premier asking that the endowments on the list, together with all others, be vested in the board and gazetted soon as possible.
The Sunsim". —A letter was read from the Premier's office in reply to an application from the board for £788, intimating that subsidy would only be pain on moneys actually in hand, The Chairman said the secretary had since applied for subsidy on £550, the amount actually received. The Position of Raglan*.—A letter was read from the Premier to the chairman of the Raglan County Council stating that in a county in which Act is not in force the various boardsjwithin it are the contributory bodies. —The Chairman said the advice of their solicitor was contrary to this.—lt was resolved to refer the matter to the solicitor.
Mk McMinn's Cask.—lt was reported that the cost of board, attendance, &c., in this case was £7 7s per week. —The Secretary read the correspondence relating to the matter, and said the friends of the patient had guaranteed the cost, but had since repudiated it.—Mr Teasdale said he had forwarded the patient under the belief that the hospital was ready to receive him. He deprecated the action of the board in sending patients to hotels instead of taking them at the hospitals. Notwithstanding the resolution of the board, they had virtually established cottage hospitals all over the district.—The Chairman said the. blame must rest on the board. The hospital was not ready, and the management committee placed the patient in a boarding-house. One of his friends, Mr Andrew, was not satisfied with the _ accommodation provided, and desired to have him removed to an hotel, but he (the chairman) declined to do this unless Mr Andrew guaranteed payment, which he did.—Mr Primrose spoke in a similar strain.—Mr Teasdale said he understood from Mr Andrew that the guarantee was only given for a few days, until the hospital was ready.—The Chairman said Mr Andrew was informed that the hospital would not be ready until the Ist June. —Mr Teasdale said there was no reason why the hospital could not be got ready in a few days. The board employed nurses at Gwynue's Hotel. Why could they not have been engaged for the hospital ? —The Chairman repeated that the friends of the patient, and not the board were responsible.—After some discussion, in which the Chairman and Messrs Primrose and Seddon maintained that Mr McMinn was not in the charge of the board, while Messrs Teasdale and Chepinell held a contrary opinion, Mr Seddon moved that the friends of Mr McMinn be informed that the hospital was now ready to receive trim. —Mr Teasdale contended that Mr _ McMinn was a patient of the hospital at the present time, and that it was the duty of the board to remove him to the hospital.—The motion was withdrawn, and a resolution to the effect that Mr Andrew be informed that the board would not be responsible for the hotel expenses, moved by Mr Gwynneth, and seconded by Mr Primrose, was carried.
A Patient from Te Kuiti.—Mr Gwynneth drew attention to the fact that a patient named Gill, from Te Kuiti, was an outdoor patient of the hospital at a cost of 12s per week. Te Kuiti was not in the Waikato district, and he would like to know who was to be responsible for the expense. He moved that the chairman write to the Government on the matter. — Mr Primrose seconded the motion, which was carried.
