HIGHLAND BAPTISM.
A Highland baptism once took place under the following' very sj;fai|ge' cii'CiiiiU stances; —fho minister bad appointed the father, with his child and the attendant train, to meet him at a particular spot, half way betwixt the residence of botl;—■ the whole distance being tgq greiti far the minister to travel, It happened however, that a mountain stream near the place of rendezvous had swollen in such a way that it was impossible for either party to cross. Under these dietressiug circumstances, a debate insued betwixt the minister on one side and the man on other, as to how they sjiould manage matters without disngroea^lo'necessity of deferring' the ceremony ; and it was at last determined that the tfian, should hold ouj; his child, and the minister to throw across some y ( T ator The distanco being somewhat considei'able, it was not without groat difficulty that the necessary ablution was performed, '' Hae ye got ony o' that ?" cried the minister at every successive lash.
